The reported cell break of seven remand prisoners has triggered chaos within the Denu community in the Keta South Municipality of the Volta Region.
Some residents who claim to be easy targets of these escaped suspects have hit the streets demanding that the police rearrest the suspects.
They told Joy News' Volta Region correspondent Ivy Setordzie that they were ones who arrested the suspects and handed them over to the police late last year.
They blocked roads and burnt tires in protest over the escape.
The Volta Region Police Commander PeterKin Yentumi Gynae confirmed the cell break in an interview with Joy FM's Super Morning Show host Kojo Yankson.
"This dawn our men were on duty at the charge office and while on their normal duties the prisoners in the cells managed to overpower them and took away two rifles.
"Seven of them managed to escape but the rest were prevented from escaping.
"We have sent word all around; all barriers; all borders. We are also searching every nook and cranny to see if we can get them back," he said.
He could not readily tell the identities of the cell breakers but the residents of Denu and its surrounding areas have an idea who the suspects are and that has left the community in fear.
Some of the residents who went on the demonstration believe their lives are at risk because after arresting the suspects, they received messages from those suspects threatening vengeance upon their escape.
The police were called in to stop the demonstration and to restore calm. The leader of demonstrators, Kabila Atsu was arrested but later released.
The police have assured that the escaped suspects will be rearrested.
