Several communities across Accra are expected to experience power interruptions on Sunday, August 23, as the Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) undertakes emergency works to replace a damaged transmission tower on the Tema–Achimota 161kV transmission line at Ashaiman.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Accra West Region, announced the planned interruption in a public notice to customers and the general public, explaining that the emergency works have become necessary following damage to the transmission infrastructure.
The exercise is scheduled to begin at 3:00 a.m. on Sunday and continue until 6:00 p.m., potentially affecting households, businesses, markets, offices and other electricity consumers in a number of communities across the capital.
According to ECG, the transmission tower was damaged when a fuel tanker exploded while welding work was being carried out on the tank within the transmission line's Right-of-Way (RoW).
The incident damaged a critical component of the high-voltage transmission network and has prompted GRIDCo to undertake emergency replacement works.
ECG has identified two groups of communities that are expected to be affected by the emergency works.
