Some customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) from various communities in the Ketu South Municipality have protested against alleged overbilling and inaccurate electricity bills, demanding greater transparency and accuracy in the billing process.
The aggrieved customers, led by Mr Edem Viglo and Mr. Napoleon Gbeti, marched to the ECG Denu District Office to present their concerns and petition the company to review disputed bills and improve its engagement with consumers.
The protesters carried placards with inscriptions including: “ECG, Give Us Accurate Bills!”, “ECG, You Can’t Do Without Your Consumers, Why This Arrogance?” and “THE MANAGER MUST GO!”
They said discrepancies in electricity bills had created frustration among consumers, particularly those who believed that the amounts charged did not correspond with their actual electricity consumption.
The customers called on ECG to ensure that bills issued to consumers were accurate, transparent, and verifiable, and to provide effective channels for customers to seek clarification and have disputed bills reviewed.
They also expressed concern about the attitude of some ECG officials towards consumers who visited the office to raise complaints or seek explanations about their bills.
Mr Viglo and Mr Gbeti, representing the aggrieved consumers, read a statement outlining their concerns and called for urgent measures to restore confidence in the billing system.
They said consumers were key stakeholders in the operations of ECG and deserved to be treated with respect and given timely responses to legitimate complaints.
The protesters appealed to ECG not to compel consumers to settle disputed amounts without first providing adequate explanations and allowing questionable bills to be properly reviewed.
Following the presentation of the statement, Mr Viglo and Mr Gbeti submitted a petition to Madam Jatoe-Kaleo Christina, Customer Service Representative at the Regional Office, who received it on behalf of the ECG Denu District.
The petition called for the review of disputed bills, improved billing accuracy, greater transparency, and better communication between ECG officials and consumers.
Mr Nicholas Kwabla Worklachie, Ketu South Municipal Chief Executive, who interacted with the protesters, assured them that their concerns would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for consideration.
He said he had also experienced what he described as alleged overbilling, stressing that the concerns raised by the customers required serious attention.
Receiving the petition on behalf of ECG, Madam Jatoe-Kaleo assured the protesters that the company would consider the issues raised and engage with the appropriate offices for redress.
She said ECG received the petition in good faith and would work towards addressing the concerns presented by the consumers.
The protesters expressed hope that the petition would lead to a fair and transparent resolution of the billing concerns and improve relations between ECG and consumers in the Municipality.
