The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Elias Sory says a lot is being done to contain the spread of the H1N1 flu pandemic and has called for public co-operation.Ghana recorded its first case of the H1N1 infection last week at the Aviation Clinic in Accra, while a suspected case reported at the Afia Nkwanta Hospital in the Western Region.Dr Sory said further tests are being conducted on the patient who is under quarantine in Accra. The patient, a female, is likely to be discharged later this week, he said.He said Ghanaians should rush to any available public health centre when they detect symptoms of the disease to avoid complications.Asked about the capacity of the service to deal with other expected cases, Dr Sory said, “as of now, we’ve got enough supplies to deal with cases that we have.”“But in case we are getting huge numbers, we believe that our partners, WHO will [help out].”He said the H1N1 flu could be likened to any seasonal influenza but insists “when you have a flu…, report. If you report we will be able to test to see whether you have the disease or not.”Dr Sory dismissed suggestions that surveillance systems to detect the disease have not been up to scratch.Authorities have been in contact with airline officials who are expected to assist in reporting suspected cases for attention. The health service said it is currently running a big educational campaign to sensitize Ghanaians on the flu.Story by Fiifi Koomson/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
