The legal tussle to stop the commercialization of genetically modified (GM) foods in the country is set to get more complicated as the Convention People's Party (CPP) considers joining the suit as co-plaintiff.

Civil society group Food Sovereignty Ghana (FSG) had sued the Agricultural Ministry and the National Biosafety Committee seeking an injunction on GM food commercialization.

Today, the Human Rights Court admitted the Attorney General’s Department and the recently set up National Biosafety Authority as new defendants.

Chairperson of the CPP Samia Nkrumah tells Joy News the Party’s central committee would soon approve the decision to join the suit.

She is confident her party joining the case will send a clear signal that Ghanaians have rejected GM foods.

She said the CPP is “happy about the injunction” suit filed by the civil society.

Samia Nkrumah stated that the CPP has always supported the cause of Food Sovereignty, and condemned the “politics and economics” behind the campaign for GM foods as “oppressive and colonial”.

Meanwhile, the hearing of the application for injunction would continue on May 4. But this is just a preliminary suit.

The substantive case in which the group is seeking a total ban on GM foods could come on after the court rules on the injunction.
