The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is criticising the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for allowing residential properties to be built around a gas station in Dansoman.

The comment follows an explosion at a gas station in the area yesterday.

Two people were badly injured as a result and are currently on admission at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Managers of the fuel station have closed down temporarily but some angry residents say they want it permanently moved from the area.

Chief Programme Officer of the EPA William Hayfron-Acquah insists no property was cited at the location when the permit was issued.

He said the Assembly failed in its duty to ensure the safety of the residents because it was supposed to conducts monitoring exercise to ensure that no residential property is built close to a fuel or gas station.

He says the EPA is willing to meet with the residents and discuss their concerns.

Mr Hayfron-Acquah said it cannot shut down the Dansoman gas filling station due to some court issues.

He said a High Court has ruled in favour of owners of the facility when safety concern issues were raised about its location.

He said despite the unfortunate situation, the Agency’s hands are tied and there is nothing they can do about it.
