The deadly swine flu pandemic has so far infected ten people in the country, officials of the Ghana Health Service have confirmed.
Director of Public Health of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Joseph Amankwah told Joy News’ Evans Mensah on Thursday all reported cases were ‘imported.’
The first case, he said was from a 45 year old man who arrived from Dubai and infected his wife with the virus. “The indigenous spread is limited,” he added.
He advised returnees to visit the hospital immediately they have symptoms of the disease in order to coil its spread.
“So far most of the cases are mild,” he said, and paid glowing tribute to cooperation from the public.
He advised the public, especially the affected persons to cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing.
“If you happen to shake hands with somebody who is coughing, remember to wash your hands, he advised.
Social distance he said was crucial in curbing the spread of the disease saying “if you are not well keep away from your colleagues.”
He said his outfit is hammering on public education "to break the cycle of transmission before the virus becomes severe," saying, the 1918 pandemic which killed over 60 million people took two years for the virus to assume a deadly proportion. The first year it was mild.
