A large number of members of the Association of Phonographic Industry (GAPI), made up of music producers, have declared their support for one of the country’s leading music producers, Opoku Asiedu, who is vying for the chairmanship position. The association will on October 2 go to the polls to elect new executives to run the association for the next two years. Positions being fiercely contested include chairman, first and second vice chairmanship, secretary, financial secretary and national organizer. The Chief Executive Officer of His Majesty Record Label, Opoku Asiedu, the main challenger to the national chairmanship of the association is heading for a resounding victory against his other challenger, John Mensah Sarpong, the immediate past chairman of the association. BEATWAVES gathered that Opoku Asiedu’s contribution to the association has attracted the attention of most members, who have pledged to vote for him. Opoku Asiedu, an astute businessman, is the sole representative of White Oat beverage in Ghana. He is very humble, compassionate and a remarkable team player. He has recently contributed over GH¢5000 to the acquisition of a 25-acre land at Brekusu near Kwabenya, for the establishment of a cultural village to house a state-of-the-art office complex, studios and a training centre for budding musicians and potential record label owners. From all sources, Mr. Asiedu excelled in two vetting sessions conducted by the association’s election committee. In a series of interviews conducted by BEATWAVES, members are clamouring for change in an industry where manipulation, bad governance, among others, is bankrupting record label owners and musicians alike.
