RIP: Second Belgian player dies in two weeks after Tim Nicot suffers cardiac arrest

Tim Nicot, a lower league footballer in Belgium, has become the second player to die of a cardiac arrest in the country in the past two weeks.

The 23-year-old left back, who played for the fourth tier side Wilrijk-Beerschot, collapsed while playing in a tournament in Hemiksem on Friday. He was placed in an induced coma and died on Monday.

His club issued a statement via Twitter saying: “KFCO Wilrijk Beerschot is in mourning. Tim Nicot has just died. We wish family and friends strength.”

On April 30, the Lokeren defender Gregory Mertens died after suffering a cardiac arrest in a game against Genk. Last week, the rugby league player Danny Jones also died of a cardiac arrest which had been triggered by hereditary heart disease.

Anderlecht, who finished second in the Belgian league, paid tribute to Nicot, tweeting their sympathies.
