Two storey buildings at Cantonments were on Friday reduced to rubble when earth-moving equipment pulled them down on the orders of a court. The building belonged to owners of Accra-based King David Hotel but a court ruled recently that the parcel of land on which they had been cited was the property of the Republic of South Korea. Lawyer for the Korean Embassy, Benard Owusu-Twumasi, said the land would be used for expansion of the embassy. Earlier Friday, ten heavily armed policemen supervised the exercise but they met stiff opposition from the owners who tell Joy News they woke up to the sight of a bulldozer and the police. According to the residents, the police claimed they (police) had been ordered by the national security coordinator to pull down the buildings, an allegation, counsel for the Korean embassy vehemently denied. Owners of the building also claim, the order to pull down the house did not come from the court as alleged by the counsel. They insist there was no prior information but Mr Owusu-Twumasi insisted they were given “appropriate warnings.” Attempts to reach the national security coordinator were unsuccessful.
