About 500 pupils from six selected schools in Accra metropolis on Friday joined the anti-poverty campaign as they called on world leaders to help bring relief to those locked in the state of deprivation.The pupils appended their signatures as a pledge to the call on governments to help end poverty.They were from Flagstaff House Basic School, Christ the King School, Mary Mother of Good Shepherd Counsel School, Al Waleed Comprehensive Basic School, 37 Military Hospital Basic School and Airport Police Junior High School.The campaign dubbed 'Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now" started four years ago as a form of reminder to world leaders on their commitment to achieve set target of ending poverty across the world by 2015. Addressing the pupils, Mrs. Evelyn Sarpong, Information Officer at the United Nation's Office in Ghana, said this year, the UN Millennium Campaign was being organised in collaboration with Civil Society Organisations, faith based groups and social movements. She said last year, about 1,225,520 people participated in the event in the country while about 116 million people around the globe participated in the worldwide celebrations. Mrs. Sarpong noted that with six years left for the deadline, it was pathetic that no country was on track to achieving the set goals. The expected goals include; the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, attainment of universal primary education, promotion of gender equality, reduction in child mortality and improvement in maternal health. The rest are; the effective combat of HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability and global partnership for development.Source: GNA
