Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu has denied reports that government has extended the contract of the Managing Director of Agricultural Development Bank (adb) Stephen Kpordzih.
The denial follows a decision by the Union of Industry Commence and Finance Workers to embark on strike because of what they say is a letter extending the term of the Managing Director of the bank.
The workers say the action is also influenced by government’s failure to ask the bank’s MD and Board to step aside for investigations to be carried out into operations of the bank.
The strike has resulted in limited services being rendered at some of the bank’s branches.
Haruna Iddrisu says he is surprised by the action of the Union workers.
In an interview with Joy Business, the Minister challenged the workers to produce a copy of the purported letter which indicated that the MD’s contract had been extended by three years.
He said, “neither the Board nor the Minister of Finance or the Office of the President is aware of any such major decision while negotiations and mediations were going on”.
He said the action of the workers is unjustified.
“They must respect government as the share holder but they also must have respect for due process and our labour law.
“You cannot with all respect to the laws of Ghana just declare a strike action overnight on the basis that you have a letter purporting to have extended the contract of the Managing Director”, he added.
