The fate of some parliamentary aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in some constituencies in the Greater Accra Region has been thrown into limbo following an injunction placed on them.
Following an exparte motion filed at the High Court in Accra by Joseph Buabeng Twumasi, former Assembly Member for Baatsona Electoral Area in the Tema West constituency, the court has set aside the NPP Steering Committee's decision to clear some six aspirants originally disqualified to contest the impending parliamentary primaries.
The court action has restrained candidates like Isaac Owiredu Amofa, Dome-Kwabenya; Adwoa Amoako, Ayawaso Central- Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, Tema West; Rarnseyer
Agyemang Prempeh, Tema Central and Vicky Bright, Okaikoi South, from holding themselves up as qualified parliamentary aspirants of their respective constituencies.
It would be recalled that a press release issued by the party and signed by Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, General Secretary, contained decisions taken by the Steering Committee on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC) under a Certificate of Urgency of which the above candidates were cleared to contest the impending primaries set for June 13, 2015.
The suit, AP 159/2015, filed at the court presided over by K.A. Ofori Atta, purportedly granted the interlocutory injunction on the candidates and the NPP for 10 days until a hearing of an appeal by the National Vetting Appeal Board of the party.
The candidates might not take part in the parliamentary primaries slated for June 14, 2015, until the hearing of the appeal by the National Vetting Appeal Board of the NPP, which is the defendant in the matter sent to the court.
Information gathered by Daily Guide indicated that the NEC would be sitting on the matter on Wednesday to determine the final fate of the aspirants.
Other candidates whose cases would be looked at include Nii Noi Nortey, Korley Klottey; Adjetey, Obom-Domeabara and Alex Blankson, Akrofuom.
Incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema West, Irene Naa Torshie Addo, threatened to appeal against a decision by the party's National Steering Committee, which overturned the disqualification of Carlos Ahenkorah, an aspiring parliamentary candidate for the area, and some other aspirants.
According to her, the Steering Committee does not have the power to revoke the Vetting Committee's decision.
Naa Torshie Addo questioned the rationale behind the revocation and wanted due process to be followed.
She said "According to the NPP constitution, if a disqualified member feels that he or she has been treated unfairly, the way to appeal is through the regional appeals committee; and if you are dissatisfied, you go to the national appeals committee. That's in the constitution of the party."
The MP was of the view that the party's Steering Committee made a hasty decision without going into the details that warranted the disqualification of the aspirants
