Angry residents of Effiduase in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday attacked the offices of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) after they were made to sleep in darkness for three straight days.
Wielding sticks, throwing stones, the angry residents destroyed a bill board in front of the office and also dashed a glass window in front of the security post at the sub-station.
After the destruction, the the residents demanded to see the manager of the of the station.
A manager at the Effiduase ECG, Adjabeng Jonathan told JOYNEWS he heard the attempts by the residents to storm his office in the morning but believed it was only going to be a demonstration. He never expected it to be an attack.
It was not until afternoon when all his explanations to the visibly disturbed group proved futile that he realised the need to find safety.
Effiduase police has since moved in to strengthen security at the ECG offices.
Jonathan Adjabeng said he had to put his phone on speaker for an engineer who was working on the fault to speak to them. The engineer assured them that the light will be back in two hours.
The residents vowed to return if the promise was not kept. The lights were back in two hours.
Ashanti Region ECG PRO, Erasmus Bedu explained to Joy News that an excavator inadvertently destroyed underground power cables while it was working and removing some tree trucks.
“It is not ECG that put the power off” he explained adding the company finds no pleasure in putting the lights off.
He described the attack as unfortunate resort to force when dialogue was available.
It emerged during the interview on Joy News, residents were not adequately informed of the official reason for three nights in darkness.
