Fire Service rescues trapped residents in Kumasi floods

The Ghana National Fire Service has rescued some residents of Aboabo in Kumasi after the building they lived in submerged in floods after heavy rains, Saturday.

Officials of the Service have said earlier that it would take them about four hours to clear the water and rescue the residents but as Joy News’ Mohammed Nurudeen reports, the residents have been rescued.

The floods caused by Saturday’s downpour is said to be as a result of the construction of buildings in water ways in the area.

It claimed one life and displaced dozens.

Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Kojo Bonsu says the Assembly is not ruling out the demolition of unauthorised structures on water ways.

He said the structures contribute to the constant flooding of certain areas anytime it rains.

“We will look at it and if we are supposed to demolish or take anything off we will do it”, he said.

However, officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are yet to provide relief items to the affected residents.
