Officials of National Security will Monday morning take charge of supervision of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) as students across the country begin to re-write some of the cancelled papers.

Deputy Education Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, told Joy News the move is to tighten the security of the exams.

“Right from the selection of the papers through to the printing…transportation to the depot…to the transfer to the exam centres, National Security is taking charge and we expect that will tighten security and prevent two weeks ago will not recur”, he said.

Mr Ablakwa is not sure if it will become a standard practice for the National Security to supervise the junior level examinations, but said the outcome of investigation into the massive leakage of the papers would decide that.

Over four hundred thousand candidates would be re-writing the English Language, Science, Religious and Moral Education, Maths and Social Studies papers that were leaked by a syndicate a few weeks ago.

“At this stage we do not know exactly where the leakages occur from”, he said. He adds that an investigative report from the National Security would play a significant role in how the exams would be supervised subsequently.

The Deputy Education Ministry revealed more people suspected to have been involved in the leakage of BECE materials have been arrested.
