Petty traders in Kumasi are demonstrating against what they describe as the hike in hawkers’ licensing fee by the metropolitan assembly. The assembly has increased the quarterly fee from GH¢0.50 pesewas to GH¢3 in addition to a daily toll of GH¢0.20. A group of agitated hawkers trooped to the premises of Luv FM to register their protest, saying the new fee would negatively impact on their livelihood. They are appealing to the city authorities to review the percentage increase. KMA officials however say the leadership of the trade associations was consulted before the fee was fixed.
