Ninety eight House Officers or fresh graduates from the University of Ghana Medical School working at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital have been sacked for embarking on a strike.Authorities at the Hospital handed the house officers dismissal letters Monday afternoon. It came shortly after the workers had announced an end to their four day strike called to protest the non disclosure of full conditions of service accompanying their employment.Even though the doctors disagreed with the conditions spelt out in their appointment letters sent them a week after they started work, they signed them on Monday afternoon. But as it appears now, it is too late.Dr Hilarious Abbew, spokesperson for the group told Joy News even though the threat to disengage health workers who embarked on strikes loomed, they had considered it an empty threat from government. He said strictly speaking, the House Officers could not be said to have embarked on a strike since they had not been appointed yet. Their appointment letters only came to them on Monday, which they signed. What they did was to withdraw their services to await what was in their emoluments.Dr. Abbew read portions of the dismissal letters signed by the CEO of the Hospital, Prof Kwabena Frimpong Boateng which said their strike action meant that the group had effectively rejected their appointments. The letter announced the authorities were taking steps to employ new House Officers.Meanwhile a nationwide strike by the Health Workers Group, started Monday Morning is still pending.
