Police in the Brong Ahafo Region have arrested one person in connection with the violence which occurred at Kwapong over the weekend.
Already the police have evacuated the men in the station there following agitations that left two people dead.
The Police say they will only return to the town if the ringleaders of the mob are arrested.
Riots broke out in Kwapong on Saturday dawn leaving at least three people dead after violence erupted when a young man was stabbed to death by a fetish priest, named only as Efo Kojo.
Deputy Regional Police Commander, DCOP Maxwell Atingani, told Joy News the fetish priest was arrested after a complaint was lodged with the police.
However, the youth in the area, according to DCOP Atingani, besieged the police station and started vandalizing property and demanded that the police allow them handle the priest their own way.
Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Cephas Arthur in an interview with Joy News said the suspect arrested is called Salifu Kabore but his true identity is yet to be verified.
He said although the police station has been closed down, the police are still in the town to ensure that what happened over the weekend does not recur.
“Presently the situation in Kwapong is calm, the fact that the station has closed down does not mean that there is no security. The place is still very calm very calm and special arrangements are being made to ensure that the town remains peaceful”, he said.
He said the police are gathering more evidence on the suspect to ensure that they are able to put up a good case in court.
Superintendent Arthur said one of the inmates who escaped from police cells during the riots has been rearrested. The other is still on the run.
But he said the police are on the heels of the second inmate and he will be apprehended very soon.
Meanwhile a journalist at Kwapong who spoke to Joy News says there is no police presence in the town.
She added that a meeting is currently underway at the chief’s palace over the issue.
