Heads of States attending the ECOWAS Summit have approved proposals for Ghana’s former Foreign Minister James Victor Gbeho to take over as President of the ECOWAS Commission.
Currently, Mr Gbeho is adviser to the President on Foreign Affairs. He will replace Dr. Mohammed Ibin Chambas whose tenure ends in March.
He takes up a new appointment in Brussels as Secretary General of the Commission of Africa, Caribbean and Pacific countries.
Head of communications at the presidency, Koku Anyidoho confirmed this to Joy News' Dzifa Bampoe in an interview on Tuesday.
According to him, Mr Gbeho's tenure will be for a year and a new president will be elected when the commission convenes a new meeting next year.
Meanwhile, outgoing ECOWAS President Dr. Mohammed Ibin Chambas says his tenure as head of the West African regional body, has brought tremendous transformation to the sub-region.
During his tenure, the ECOWAS Secretariat was transformed into a Commission with enhanced powers.
This was necessary to deepen member states’ commitment to regional integration.
Speaking to Accra-based radio station Asempa FM at the ongoing 37th Summit of Heads of State and Government in Abuja, Dr Chambas said the region is now stable.
According to Dr Chambas, the region is no longer experiencing the civil wars and other conflicts that had been claiming lives daily.
“We have been able to place ECOWAS on a higher pedestal,” he said, adding “There is a new thinking. We have a set of norms, shared values that we are applying, and that is tremendous advancement in the region,” Dr Chambas indicated.
