The Ghana National Fire Service is unhappy about the water company’s decision to seal off some hydrants explaining it hampers effective fire fighting.
Officials of the fire service say the hydrants only work in one suburb of Accra, Dansoman.
Public Relations Officer of the fire service Samuel Sowah Oble-Jumah said the situation presents a major hazard as the service will hamper the efforts of personnel to put out fires.
Mr Oble-Jumah also indicated that closing the hydrants is unfair because consumers are billed with the cost of operating the hydrants.
The Communications Director of Aqua Vitens Rand Stanley Mantey, however, says Ghana Water Company (GWC) has not sealed off any hydrant.
Rather, he said, many of the hydrants are out of order because of misuse.
Mr. Martey told Joy News that managers of the two institutions will meet to resolve the matter.
The fire service has been criticised for being slow to put out fires in the metropolis.
Fire hydrants have been one of the major source of water for the service over the years.
But many of the hydrants are being destroyed through the activities of illegal consumers.
