Inmates of the Ashaiman police cells are to be relocated to give way for the immediate renovation works to start on the cells.
The Inspector General of Police says the reconstruction of the police cell has become necessary following the suffocation to death of two inmates about a week ago.
At least 30 people had been crammed into a cell that was originally supposed to take a maximum of 10 inmates, officials said.
Inmates do all their personal cleaning in the same small room which has only three small holes for ventilation.
Police Public Affairs Director DSP Kwesi Ofori says resources are ready for the project to begin.
He said a special team has been dispatched by the Police Administration to ensure a successful redesign of the cell.
According to him, the inmates will be distributed among other cells in the region while the reconstruction is underway.
DSP Kwesi Ofori tells Joy News similar projects would be undertaken in other cells facing similar ventilation problems.
