A group of angry traders threw stones and other missiles at the police and AMA officials to disrupt a demolition exercise at the Achimota old station, near the railways. The exercise which started smoothly on Thursday morning without any anticipation of a revolt, turned horrible midway through, as stones and other offensive weapons started flying in the direction of the police. This compelled the then ill-prepared police personnel supervising the exercise to take cover at the Achimota police station, leaving innocent people around no option but to also run helter-skelter for their lives. Asempa FM’s correspondent Yaa Ayisa reporting from her “unknown hideout” painted a very nasty scene of the situation, saying people including herself had to enter houses and rooms without invitation. Violent traders also turned their anger on passing vehicles, smashing windscreens and denting the body of the vehicle. The exercise became imminent after the lorry station along the Achimota-Nsawam road was relocated to pave way for construction works to ease traffic. But some traders whose structures also serve as residential purposes resisted the exercise resulting in a fierce confrontation with the police causing injuries to both sides.
