Eight inmates of the Ashaiman Police cells are refusing transfer to the Nsawam Prison and are reported to have smeared themselves with human excreta.
The Inspector General of Police recently ordered the decongestion of the cell following the death of two inmates who were reported to have suffocated due to overcrowding.
The cell is to be reconstructed, and seven of the 15 inmates who remained in the cells after many others were distributed to other police cells, were Friday morning transferred to the Nsawam Prison.
A police officer told Adom FM’s Kofi Adoma that the remaining eight however insist they will not move because their relations who provide them food and other needs while in custody, cannot make the journey regularly to the Nsawam prison.
They subsequently rushed to the toilets in the cells and smeared themselves with faecal matter to frustrate their transfer.
