The swift response of fire service personnel prevented what would have been a major fire outbreak at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).A unit which supplies power to the corporation’s new studio was completely shuttered. The fire is believed to have been caused by a power surge, sources at the state broadcaster say. This is the latest in a series of fire outbreaks that have engulfed some key institutions in the country. It follows closely on the heels of another one which gutted the Ridge residence of ex-president Rawlings.A store room at the Ministry of Information was also recently torched but fire service personnel were on hand at to quell it.The 10-storey Foreign Affairs Ministry was rendered unusable when an inferno engulfed it on 22 October 2009.Workers at the ministry have since been working from the Golden Jubilee House.Meanwhile, the numerous fires are stoking suspicions of foul play.
Information Minister Zita Okaikoe is on record to have said some persons are behind the fires.Story by Fiifi Koomson/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
