Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Saturday called at the Ridge residence of former President Jerry Rawlings to console the former First Family on the fire disaster which gutted their residence of over twenty years and destroyed property and vital documents.
Accompanied by Liberian Ministers of State and the Liberian Ambassador to Ghana, Mrs. Johnson told Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings she was shocked at the level of destruction she had seen as she had been under the impression that just part of the residence had been burnt.
Nana Konadu who received President Johnson alongside Mr. Herbert Mensah and daughters Yaa Asantewaa and Amina recounted the discovery of the fire at dawn last Sunday and how she escaped the fire with Yaa Asantewaa.
Mrs. Johnson later wrote in the visitors’ book that all Liberians were in sympathy with the Rawlingses over their loss, stating that the former first couple had been instrumental in assisting Liberia to recover from years of civil war.
It would be recalled that when the Liberian civil war went out of control it was President Rawlings who led his ECOWAS colleagues to establish the ECOMOG force to enforce and keep the peace in Liberia. Ghana also played host to thousands of fleeing Liberian refugees during the Rawlings regime.
