Hundreds of people have been left homeless and cut off from the rest of Tamale after torrential rains swept through the Northern Region capital.
Residents in Bilpela and Kalariga, suburbs of Tamale, were worst hit.
The heavy rains lasted for about an hour and half, flooding homes of the residents and destroyed many properties.
This is not the first time the communities have been flooded, but residents attribute the latest floods to an abandoned road project.
Some residents told Joy News the flood could have been prevented had the abandoned road project – which has an accompanying drainage system – been completed.
Residents are appealing to Tamale Metropolitan Assembly and the Tamale South Member of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, to intervene before lives are lost.
“We want him to come and help us. This is too much for us”, said Yusif Mohammed a resident of Bilpela.
Joy News Northern Region Correspondent, Martina Bugri, says officials say they are assessing the damage and would laise with the National Disaster and Management Organisation (NADMO) to support the affected victims.
The displaced persons are currently putting up with relatives and friends.
