Moses Odotei Mensah, a banker, who as Manager of the Pramkese Agency of the Kwaebibirem Rural Bank, stole GH¢ 24,827, was on Tuesday sentenced to a term of three years in hard labour, by the Asamankese Circuit Court.
He pleaded not guilty.
The court ordered that Mensah, who refunded GH¢ 7,170 out of the amount stolen, should after his sentence pay the remaining GH¢ 17, 657 to the bank.
Giving the facts of the case, Police Inspector Francis Cobbina, said
Mensah was in charge of the Pramkese Agency of the Kwaebibirem rural bank between 2006 and 2008.
He said between July and September 2008, the Internal Auditor of the
bank during his normal internal control and auditing, detected that Mensah had deliberately manipulated customers' accounts and granted fictitious loans to himself.
Mensah then succeeded in withdrawing a total of GHC 24,827 from the bank.
A report was made to the police and he was arrested and during
interrogation, Mensah promised to refund the amount.
On April 21, 2009, Mensah was finally arrested and charged for court.
