The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Paul Tawiah Quaye says he needs the co-operation of all police men as he embarks on a campaign to restore the image of the service.
He reiterated his commitment to deal severely with any police officer(s) whose actions or inactions further tarnish the image of the police service.
The IGP was addressing police personnel of the Ashanti Regional Police Command Wednesday morning.
He said it was time policemen asked themselves why they were not accorded the same level of respect by the society as their military counterparts.
According to him, the negative attitude of police personnel such as extortion of money from drivers accounted for the situation where the police were not respected.
Mr Tawiah Quaye reminded the police of their duty to create an atmosphere of peace and stability necessary for the development of the country.
Meanwhile the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Patrick Timbilla, commended the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for assisting the police in their fight against crime in the region.
Briefing the IGP, Mr Timbilla, said the Asantehene had mapped out strategies that had enhanced security in Ashanti.
He said crime in the region had been controlled considerably and stressed that the police will continue to focus on that agenda.
