Pressure is mounting on the Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, Professor John Evans Atta-Mills to step in and deal with the alleged plot by some high ranking members of the party to kill MP for Tamale South Haruna Iddrisu.
The NDC is yet to make any formal public comments on the alleged assassination attempt and Haruna Iddrisu himself has refused to confirm or deny the story except to say that his life is in the hands of his maker.
The Ghanaian Observer and the Gye Nyame Concord newspapers broke the news of Haruna Iddrisu’s alleged assassination plot last week but have failed to name those behind it.
Some members of the NDC have dismissed the report. The editors of the two newspapers have vehemently defended their story but have since refused to mention those who are planning the murder except to say that they are two members of parliament; one from Greater Accra region and the other from the Volta region.
Some members of the party say the silence from both Mr. Iddrisu and the leadership of the NDC is so loud it has not helped the issue. They are therefore appealing to Prof. Mills who is the leader of the party to invite Haruna Iddrisu and hear his side of the story and help address the matter.
Mr. Iddrisu is not only a strong force in the NDC in the Northern region where Prof. Mills had a rousing welcome two weeks ago when he was there to donate to rainstorm disaster victims, but many NDC faithful believe he is crucial to the party’s campaign to recapture power in the 2008 polls.
The party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu-Nketia’s position is that Haruna himself must break his silence on the allegations.
Joy News sources in the NDC say Prof. Mills himself is worried about the allegations and expects the Dr. Kwabena Adjei-led national executive to deal with it.
But now some members of the party are calling on him to help resolve the matter in the interest of party unity and cohesion, which they say is critical to the 2008 campaign.
