The Food and Drugs Board (FDB) says it would process the importer of 6,000 cartons of turkey tail (tsofi), one Mary Adjetey of Binamay Enterprise for prosecution.
The FDB says despite the ban on importation of the product into the country, thousands of cartons are being imported to the detriment of innocent Ghanaians.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa News, the Head of Animal Product of the FDB branch in Tema, Richard Osei Amponsah said the importers of “tsofi” have resorted to mixing them with chicken, making it difficult to detect. “They mix it with chicken legs and other products,” he explained.
The Tema Regional branch of the FDB Friday destroyed 4,000 cartons of “tsofi” at the Kpone landfill site.
This forms part of 6,000 cartons confiscated to the state in February of which 2,000 were destroyed yesterday at the same site.
Officials from FDB; National Security; Bureau of National Investigations; Customs, Excise and Preventive Service; the Ghana Police and the Tema Metropolitan Assembly who were expected to witness the destruction of this one as well.
The consignment arrived at the Tema Port from Italy in three 40-footer containers concealed among a quantity of chicken wings consigned to Mary Adjetey of Binamay Enterprise but to date nobody has claimed ownership.
Mr. Osei Amponsah told Asempa News from the landfill site that the FDB is bent on stopping the activities of these importers because they are destroying the health system of the country. “They should think of the health of the country first than their individual interests”.
He urged Ghanaians to desist from consuming “tsofi” because it’s not hygienic for their health. “We are going to educate students and school children on the hazards of consuming “tsofi” and when they go home, they would also educate their parents and elders,” he said.
