Coach Rajevac would have learnt next to nothing about his team following last night’s 4-1 thrashing of the Black Stars at the hands of Holland. Neither would scores of fans throughout the country who tuned in to Joy Sports and Adom TV on Multi-TV to see Rajevac’s chosen 23 on display for the first time. Holland, coming into this match had already played a handful of warm-up matches and this fact was evidenced by their superiority over the Black Stars in all departments of the game from start to finish. The Dutch had copious amounts of all that their African counterparts lacked: cohesion, teamwork, ruthless efficiency in front of goal, telepathic off-the-ball movement and tactical discipline-attributes that appear only after a sustained period of time playing together. Dirk Kuyt got the rout underway with a typically scrappy but deserved goal on the half hour. A Van-Persie thunderbolt was parried by Ghanaian keeper Richard Kingson in to the path of the Liverpool striker who stabbed the ball home. Holland dominated the remainder of the half but failed to add to their lead. Coach Rajevac made wholesale changes to his team at the start of the second half bringing on John Mensah, Dede Ayew, Prince Tagoe, Asamoah Gyan and Dominic Adiyiah in place of Isaac Vorsah, Sulley Muntari, Matthew Amoah, Stephen Appiah and the impressive Quincy Owusu. The changes had the desired effect, as urgency was introduced into the play of the younger Stars. Dutch substitute Rafael Van der Vaart made the game momentarily safe for the L’Orange , by finishing off a delightful one-two with Mark Van Bommel on 73 minutes. A lapse in defence allowed Asamoah Gyan to pull one back for the Black Stars in the 80th minute. Any hopes of an unlikely comeback were snuffed out by Sneidjer through a long-range tame effort and a well-taken Van Persie penalty three minutes to the end. Fans of the Stars who thronged outlets to experience Multi-TV’s big screen experience were for the most part unconcerned by the Stars lack-lustre display. They, like Coach Rajevac and his technical team will know that friendlies before a major tournament are not result oriented but focus more on the endless but necessary tactical chopping and changing needed to pick the starting eleven. Besides history shows that the Stars perform rather badly in their first games prior to a tournament or indeed at the tournament itself, but gather needed momentum as tournaments progress, peaking at the right time. The Stars will hopefully put up an improved performance when they play Latvia in London on Saturday at 1:00pm.
