A recent study published by the British Medial Journal Lancet trumpeted a drop in maternal mortality rates around the world.
But Sub Saharan Africa still records the highest number of women dying during pregnancy, childbirth and soon after. This continent accounts for 99 percent of all the deaths worldwide.
And, in Ghana the death rate is unacceptably high, especially in some rural areas. According to the latest statistics, about one out of every 45 women in our country runs the risk of dying in childbirth or from pregnancy complications.

Our correspondent Kwaku Owusu-Peprah in Takoradi visits a remote area of the Western Region where the joy of birth is overshadowed by the fear of death.
In some places people say lives could have been saved if it were not for the added danger of the impassable roads women in labour have to travel.
