The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called for a review of the recent water and electricity tariff increases.NUGS says consumers are not convinced by the reasons outlined for the increases, and would want the government to rather investigate the operations of utilities providers with a view to improving the quality of service delivery.A press statement by the Union said blatant inefficiencies in the operations of the companies, including long queues formed during payment of bills, discourage consumers from paying bills promptly.NUGS also wants a probe into what it calls the deliberate delay in issuing prepaid meters for years, as well as how much has accrued from charges on street lights since the government spends billions on street light and rural electrification.The Public Utilites Regulatory Commission in approving tariff increases for the utility providers las week, directed them to plug loopholes in their operations and to deliver quality service.NUGS said should the government fail to address this directive from the PURC, it will join forces with other relevant consumer-watch agencies to demonstrate her displeasure at the hikes.NUGS also condemned what it said was a spate of Violence and indiscipline in Senior High Schools across the country and on the various campuses.“While we call on the students to exercise restraint in their quest to demand solutions to the fusillade of challenges they face, We also insist that school authorities should be realistic in their promises to students and appreciate the diversity of knowledge amongst their students and involve them in their decision making processes.NUGS said the seeming lack of involvement of students in the decision making process may account for the resistance such decision face.“We also call on the GHANA EDUCATION SERVICE and MINISTRY OF EDUCATION to conduct an urgent investigation into fees (illegal) charged by institutions under their watch to curtail some of these challenges in the future.“We also call on the various committees charged to investigate the allegations to complete their work in earnest, identify the perpetrators as well as the victims of the disturbances and make appropriate recommendations to forestall future occurrence.“We also do hope that the schools will be reopened soon to resume academic work as this is the core of our concern.”Story by Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
