Uganda has backtracked on comments suggesting Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir was not invited to July's African Union conference in Kampala. Over the weekend, Sudan demanded an apology after Uganda's president was quoted as saying he was not coming. Since the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Mr Bashir last year for alleged war crimes in Darfur he has had to limit his travel. Uganda is currently hosting a summit reviewing the progress of the ICC. Mr Bashir denies the ICC charges and the African Union has said it will not honour the warrant. But on Saturday, Uganda's state house said President Yoweri Museveni had assured the ICC president that Sudan would be represented by other government officials in July. Following the outrage from Khartoum, however, Uganda's foreign ministry issued a statement to "clarify" that Mr Bashir had been invited to the summit of African leaders. "The Sudanese embassy in Kampala has confirmed that they received and sent the invitation letter to Khartoum," a statement said. Last July, Mr Bashir cancelled plans to travel to Uganda following speculation he could be arrested.
