The Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission, George Sarpong has asked agitated workers of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation to exercise restraint as the Commission finalises its selection process to appoint a Director General. There has been uneasy calm at the state broadcaster, following leaked information on the nominee for the position of Director General. The Media Commission said it would soon complete its selection and announce a Director General, but workers say they have information that out of four shortlisted candidates for the interview, a lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, Ampem Darko had been chosen. Also in the race for appointment is the GBC’s Acting Director General, Yaw Owusu Addo.A worker told Joy News, apart from Yaw Owusu Addo, there are several other qualified persons who previously served as acting directors among who a substantive appointment could be made rather than a new person to the GBC working environment.Union leaders at GBC say Mr. Ampem Darko is a known sympathizer of the ruling party and contested in the party’s parliamentary primary for the Kade seat and suspect it could be the reason he was chosen over the others. However, the Executive Secretary of the Media Commission insists the process had not been completed yet, and while it would soon announce who it has selected for the post, it would pay if individuals are seen without any political colouring.
