A Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua is accusing the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation of draining its resources to artificially manage Ghana's power situation.

Isaac Asiamah who is also a member of the Mines and Energy Committee does not understand why the Corporation will dole out a whopping $41 million to buy fuel to power thermal plants.

He said if such financial impropriety is not curtailed the Corporation will be completely grounded to a halt.

The finances of the Corporation have come under serious scrutiny following the payment of the $41 million to the Volta River Authority to purchase crude oil to power the thermal plants.

According to Asiamah, officials of the corporation in a rather unusual transaction gave the said amount to Universal Merchant Bank to be given to the VRA

"All these investment they are making will not benefit this country. They should stop it.

"...GNPC is not a banking institution and they should stop it.

"This energy crisis is being artificially managed," he told Joy News' Parliamentary correspondent Elton John Brobbey.

When he was asked what was wrong in asking a state institution  to help in the payment of buying crude to help solve a national problem, the MP said that is not the core duty of the GNPC.

He argued GNPC's investment is meant for oil exploration and wondered why the government would allow monies from the corporation to be used.

"You can't call this prudent investment. It cannot be possible.

"Very soon it is going to affect the operations of the GNPC and it will collapse, he said.

The Vice chairman of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, Adam Mutawakilu says the committee is investigating the circumstances under which the GNPC put the $41 million to the bank.

He said the committee has asked the GNPC to submit some important documents and they have obliged to do that.

He said the committee will peruse the documents and take a decision.
