A circuit court in Techiman presided by Mr. Michael Kudjo Ntumy has sentenced Kwabena Yeboah, a 23 year-old farmer, to nine months imprisonment in-hard-labour for stealing a mini-bagful of cocoyam valued at GH¢50.
The cocoyam belonged to Mr. Emmanuel Kwesi Kyeremeh, a resident of Fante New Town in Techiman.
Presenting the facts of the case, Detective Sergeant Batholomew Diboro, told the court that Mr. Kyeremeh, the complainant, experienced many thefts of produce on his farm at Mampehia.
D/Sgt Diboro said on July 4th this year, he went to the farm and detected that someone had harvested a large portion of his cocoyam plantation and his investigations revealed that Yeboah harvested the cocoyam. The complainant reported the case to the Techiman Police Station.
He said Yeboah on his arrest admitted committing the offence and led the police to retrieve the cocoyam, which he had given to one Akosua Asama, a plantain/cocoyam dealer at Techiman Central/Market to sell for him.
The cocoyam has since been given back to Kyeremeh.
Mr. Ntumy advised the youth to engage in useful ventures instead of stealing and should use their exuberance for the socio-economic development of the country.
