A joyous church service turned bizarre for a 28-year-old pastor in Kumasi on Saturday when he was shot, whilst in the middle of an all night service, by an unidentified gunman.
Pastor Osei Kwame, the founder and leader of Truth Miracle Fellowship Center at Asafo Zion, a Suburb of Kumasi, was leading his congregation in an all-night service when the runaway gunman entered and shot him in the right shoulder.
The young pastor, who resides at Fumesua, near Ejisu in the EjisuJuabeng district of the Ashanti region, told DAILY GUIDE in an interview that they were having their usual Friday all-night service when an unknown person entered the venue at 12.00 am.
He said after entering the venue, the man, who wore a- brown jacket, started raining insults on them, after which he pointed a single barrel gun at the pastor, threatening to shot him if the congregation dared to raise an alarm.
According to the pastor, the man ordered him and the church members to surrender their phones on the ground and also lie down, a command they hurriedly obeyed.
Pastor Osei pointed out that before he could lie down as directed, the man, who was still insulting the church members for making noise, without provocation shot him in his left arm.
The pastor disclosed that the absconded gunman then pulled another bullet from his pocket and attempted to refill the gun he was wielding.
"When I realized his devilish intention, I gathered courage and fled through the windows, though I was deeply hurt and blood was oozing from my wound," Pastor Osei stated.
He noted that when his members realized that he had managed to escape, they also mustered courage and attempted to pounce on the unknown gunman who was in the process of refilling his gun.
According to him, the gunman abandoned his horrific intention and took to his heels when he realized that the church members were in the process of attacking him.
Pastor Osei indicated that when calm was restored to the place, the church members took him and another member who also sustained gunshot injury on the left shoulder to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for medical attention.
He noted that due to the severity of the injuries they sustained, doctors at the hospital operated on them immediately and removed the bullets:
Whilst receiving medical care at the hospital, Pastor Osei said, a report was made to the police and a team of policemen from the Central Police Unit visited him and took his statement.
Though he had recovered and was going about his normal duties, the pastor said the other church member who also got injured in the attack was still at the hospital receiving medical attention.
According to him, whilst the church service was ongoing, he saw the absconded gun man roaming about on the church premises, speaking on the phone but did not smell any foul play.
A source at the central police command confirmed the incident but indicated that investigations were still underway and that the police will do everything to apprehend the suspect.
