Five persons including the Assemblyman of Garishegu have been arrested for attempting to harm a key witness in a murder case pending at a Tamale Circuit Court.
The Assemblyman of the area, Seidu Yagu, 43, was arrested together with Abdul Rahman Sulemana A5, Baba Ibrahim 24, Fataw Abdulai, 46 and Hardi Fusheini, 30.
Giving an account of events leading to the arrest, the Tamale Metropolitan Police Commander, DSP Caesar Abanga, disclosed that on August 23 at about 7:55pm, the suspects tried lynching their victim, Abdulai Adam, but did not succeed due to the timely intervention of some Good Samaritans.
Alhassari Yakubu and Andani Ibrahim were returning from Nyankpala when they came upon the attempted attack on Abdulai Adam.
According to the two, on reaching Changnayili and Nrangbala on the main Nyankpala road in their saloon car with registration number GR 6092 T, they spotted Abdulai Adam's motorbike parked by the roadside.
The witnesses claimed that they stopped to ask him why he had parked and he responded that he had stopped to ease himself in the bush.
No sooner had the victim responded to their queries than he rushed out of the bush, indicating that some armed persons numbering about 30 were rushing towards him. The Police commander indicated that the victim said the about 30 persons were wielding machetes, clubs and other life threatening weapons, ready to pounce on him."
Adam was however whisked away in the saloon car but the attackers tried vandalizing the speeding vehicle to no avail. The police revealed that his (Adam) motorbike, which was left behind, was damaged by the irate attackers who accused him of leading the police to effect their arrest. At the time of going to press, the five were being processed for court to face various charges.
The Northern Regional Police Commander, ACP Awuni Angwubutoge, has however warned that the police are on high alert and would not tolerate lawlessness again.
He told DAILY GUIDE that residents of Garishegu should embrace peace, indicating that anyone caught trying to destabilize the peace of the area would be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the country.
It would be recalled how tension brewed in Garishegu after Naa Yakubu Andani, Chief of the area, was ambushed and murdered. His death set the tone for violence in the area, leading to the burning down of three houses and rendering a number of persons homeless.
Forty-eight persons initially arrested in connection with the violence were later, granted bail while others were being processed for court.
Traces of seeming tension over the death of Naa Yakubu Andani still persist as aggrieved residents keep pointing fingers at Abdulai Adam for spearheading their arrest.
