A 46 year-old Burkinabe, Sheriff Usman, who claims to be a soothsayer, has been remanded in police custody by the Western Regional Police Command in Sekondi for possessing fake Ghanaian and United States currency notes.
Briefing the media in Sekondi at the weekend, the Western Regional Police Commander, DCOP Alhaji Hamidu Mahama, said the suspect arrived in Takoradi on Tuesday, September 1 from Burkina Faso en route to Cote d’Ivoire.
The Police Commander said he lodged at the Takoradi Hotel and engaged the services of a commercial sex worker from the central city of Takoradi.
DCOP Mahama said after the affair, Usman paid the commercial sex worker with GH¢30.00 in GH¢20.00 and GH¢10.00 denominations.
The lady later detected that the currency notes were fake, and therefore alerted the Police, who arrested Usman, in his hotel room.
The Commander said a search on him revealed another 13 pieces of 100 dollar notes, nine pieces of GH¢20.00 notes and eight pieces of GH¢10.00, all found to be fake currency notes.
Upon interrogation, he said, the suspect indicated that he got the currency notes from a certain Alhaji Ibrahim in Burkina Faso.
