The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) says the Inspector General of Police has failed in carrying out his core duties and must resign his position.“Our fears are heightened by the inability of state institutions i.e. the Police Service headed by the IGP to defend our constitution and protect individual liberties and human rights,” spokesperson of the pressure group, Martin Adjei Mensah told Joy News.He had minutes earlier organized a press conference during which he chronicled violent incidents at the Atiwa by-election and cited them as reasons for demanding the resignation of Paul Tawiah Quaye. He also made reference to recent comments by the Chairman of the ruling party Dr. Kwabena Adjei on the judiciary, comments he said had the tendency of undermining the country’s young democracy but which was glossed over by the police.“In this particular matter where a judge recuses himself for fear for his life caused by the statement of the chairman of the ruling party it was most instructive, most appropriate that the IGP and his men move into action,” he said.He also accused the police of bias, a phenomenon he said could lead to people taking the law into their own hands.“It is becoming increasingly clear that the police are failing to operate in an even-handed and balanced manner in the moderation of the political activities in this country.”“…If we are not careful many of the people will be beginning think of taking up actions that will protect themselves their freedoms and their political interest.”“If the IGP fails to resign the president must fire him," he noted, because they need to apply the rules of service to all Ghanaians.Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
