An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a footballer, Abeiku Newton, to four years imprisonment with hard labour on his own plea for stealing £85,000.00, GH₵835.00 and sixty Holland Wax Print clothes, belonging to one Grace Boye at Dansoman in Accra.
Abeiku pleaded guilty and asked for forgiveness but the presiding judge declined and sentenced the accused on his own plea.
The prosecutor of the case told the court that, Abeiku was a former house help of the victim Madam Grace Boye at Dansoaman in Accra.
On 3rd August, 2010, the victim, who had returned from London, asked the convict to assist her in arranging some things in her house.
The prosecution related that in the course of the arrangement, the convict spotted the said amounts under the pillow of the victim and stole the money.
The convict trailed the victim and on 18th of August, 2010, the victim accompanied her son, Fred Boye, who happened to be a friend of the convict, to the Airport to travel to London and while away, the convict, managed to open the main gate of the house with a fake key.
The prosecutor said Abeiku Newton climb the building with a ladder, broke the glasses of the window, and made away with the £85,000.00, GH₵835.00 and 60 Holland Wax Print clothes.
Abeiku again wrote two warning letters with the same content, warning his friend, Fred, to stay away from his (Abeiku’s) girlfriend else, he would kill him.
When Abuiku was asked why he wrote those letters, he told the court that, he did not mean to kill Fred and his mother.
He explained that, Fred’s girlfriend told him (Abeiku) to advice Fred since he was a womanizer and because he could not tell Fred in the face, he wrote that letter to threaten him.
