Despite endorsing the Presidential candidature of his wife for the 2012 elections, former President Jerry John Rawlings remains Founder of the NDC, a minister has said.
At a forum recently, Mr. Rawlings endorsed his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings as the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Party (NDP).
He attacked members of the governing party, accusing them of corruption and moral decadence.
But speaking on the former president’s actions on Joy FM and MultiTV’s news analysis show, Newsfile, Roads Minister, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, said in spite Mr. Rawlings’ decision, he remains founder of the NDC.
He said the party has rules guiding the conduct of members and detailing what constitutes acceptable behaviour.
He will neither condemn nor endorse the former president’s actions except to say that “We are observing and at the appropriate time, the party will respond.”
Commenting on the issue, Editor-In-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako said the standing of the Rawlingses in NDC has progressively diminished.
He said Mr. Rawlings' name remains on the NDC's Constitution as Founder, but "effectively, politically, Mr. Rawlings' influence has diminished in the NDC of today. The NDC chaps themselves would not want to admit that for sentimental and nostalgic reasons but that is the reality."
Mrs. Rawlings' nomination forms as a Presidential candidate were rejected by the Electoral Commission in the lead up to the 2012 Presidential Elections because the forms had not been properly completed.
Kweku Baako said to that extent it is difficult to adequately assess the impact of her candidature on the governing NDC.
"She would compete this time from the way things are going; we still have to wait to see the outcome but I can tell you, one thing that would be clear is the nuisance value in terms of the propaganda; they can cause some irritation and headache to the NDC if especially the husband decides to join her campaign trail," he said.
Kweku Baako believes "it is too late in the day for Rawlings and Mrs Rawlings to go out there and decisively affect NDC performance in terms of votes."
