Fifteen persons out of the 99 people who suffered various injuries in the Saturday motor accident at Zogu in the Savelugu/Nanton District of the Northern Region have been discharged from the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).
Dr. Prosper Akambong, Director of Medical Affairs at the TTH who disclosed this to Times said 10 persons are still in critical condition.
He said that two more deaths occurred yesterday bringing the total number of deaths to 27.
Dr. Akambong said six of the accident victims 'absconded' and 55 others are still on admission receiving treatment.
According to him, lack of essential medical equipment and the rush of sympathisers and relatives to the hospital impeded the work of the medical staff leading to the high deaths in the accident.
On Saturday, the Tamale metropolis was thrown into mourning and anxiety when a cargo truck carrying mourners was involved in an accident at Zagyuri, near Tamale on the Tamale-Bolgatanga highway.
Dr. Akamong said some of the deaths could have been avoided if there was enough security to prevent the influx of relatives and sympathisers who thronged the hospital.
Dr. Akambong said medical staff at post went through a chaotic and hectic time attending to the victims who were rushed to the hospital.
Marcellinus K. Weber, Director of Administration of the hospital, also called for the establishment of an emergency centre in the region to take care of accident victims in the area.
Meanwhile, all the 27 dead bodies were on Sunday buried at the Tamale public cemetery.
Some relatives and sympathisers could not hold back their tears and emotions when the bodies were lowered into their graves after some Islamic rites had been performed.
The Minister of Transport, Mike Hammah, yesterday led a government delegation to Tamale to express government's condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families and also wished the injured a speedy recovery.
He donated GH¢ 10,000 on behalf the government to ameliorate the suffering of the victims.
