The Electoral Commission’s 11 day limited voter’s registration exercise has ended in centres across the country.
The exercise was to afford first-time voters the opportunity to get their electoral roll to enable vote in this year’s general elections slated for November 7.
The registration exercise was plagued by suspicion, confusion and wanton challenging of applicants’ eligibility by the two major political parties.
The governing National Democratic Congress and opposition New Patriotic Party traded accusations of each side bussing foreigners and minors to centres to register.
General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia said both parties were guilty of these infractions.
The EC is expected to review the exercise before a decision can be made whether or not to extend it.
But even this assessment is done, Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South, Ahmed Arthur is appealing for an extension.
He told Joy News there was insufficient publicity and that many were not adequately informed and therefore could not take advantage of the process to register.
Joy News' Ivy Setordjie said registration had ended in the southern part of the Volta region by 6:00 PM but potential first-time voters who could not register were pleading with the EC to extend the date.
Although hot weather posed a challenge in the Upper East region as Biometric Verification Machines constantly got over-heated and slowed down the process, the Regional Director, James Arthur- Yeboah said they were close to achieving the target.
In the Central region, Richard Kojo Nyarko said some centres had ended the registration although some people were still at the centres hoping to be registered.
He added that some centres were still registering first-time registrants after 6:00 PM.
