Economist, Dr. Joe Abbey says Ghana must begin to focus more on becoming a trading nation if it is to compete favourably with other Asian economies. He was speaking at the launch of the mid-term review of the state of Ghana’s economy by the Centre for Policy Analysis.According to Dr. Abbey who is CEPA’s Executive Director, Ghana’s manufacturing sector stands to lose out if it continues to flop.He argued that “Ghana’s economy is too small to be a basis for propelling us [to higher growth], we must trade, we must have larger markets than the Ghanaian economy can provide. But to have larger markets, you must raise your productivity and competitiveness.”The presentation painted a gloomy picture about the performance of the economy.Amongst some of the issues that was of concern is government’s spending in relation to its revenue.Dr. Joe Abbey told Joy Business government, it appears may end the year with a much bigger deficit than last year.Source: Joy Business/Ghana
