Eleven prisoners on remand at the Nsawam prison have been acquitted under the Justice For All Programme, Tuesday.
Also 34 detainees at the maximum security facility were granted bail under the programme that seeks to decongest Ghana’s detention centres.
The release of the prisoners follows a Joy News documentary, ‘Locked and Forgotten’, by Seth Kwame Boateng which highlighted the poor state of the country’s prisons.
At total of 92 cases were heard by the special Remand Review Taskforce on Tuesday.
The Justice For All Programme is a DANIDA-funded project that seeks to provide swift administration of justice, especially cases involving inmates who had been in custody for at least five years.
Chairman of Remand Review Taskforce, Justice Clemence Honyenugah, told Joy News' Joseph Ackah-Blay the absence of officials of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police during the case reviews hindered the remand review process.
“Sufficient notice was given to them because they are valuable. They give us information about the cases and the [inmates]. When they are absent, it disturbs the court,” he said.
He was hopeful the CIDs would be present during the next review process.
