Road safety records indicate, 9, 997 accidents have so far been recorded between January and September 2010.1,333 lives have been lost, whilst 9,728 people have suffered various forms of injuries.2,757 injuries and 698 accidents were recorded over the same period last year.The country lost a total of 5,831 lives, between January 2006 and December 2009.In spite of numerous interventions to curb road accidents, reported cases continue to rise especially during the major festive periods.MTTU records indicate 1,378 lives were lost in 2006, though it dropped to 1,346 in 2007, it again increased to 1,520 and 1, 587 in 2008 and 2009.Road safety officials fear the records may rise again with the first three quarters already recording a total of 1,333 deaths.Major causes include over-loading, over-speeding, drink-driving and poor maintenance practice.The frightening statistics is a the major challenge for the new MTTU commander, ACP Angwubutoge Awuni, who insisted, the situation can only get better through pragmatic steps and measures.He sees robust enforcement of road traffic laws and regulations as the only way to ensure sanity.ACP Awuni, appealed to the driving public to value the lives of people they are transporting.Source: TV3
