The immediate past Board chairman of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor John Aheto has described Mr. William Ampem-Darko, former Director General of GBC as an arrogant man who runs the institution as his personal property.
He said Mr. Ampem-Darko deliberately reverses the Board's appointment of employees and brings in those who are loyal to him and can those he can easily manipulate.
“He sacks people without due process and due hearing and brings his people without the approval of the board”
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sέn programme, Prof. Aheto said, Mr. Ampem-Darko is on record to have said “he is untouchable and no one can do anything to him. Boards have come and gone and did not do anything better for GBC”.
The National Media Commission on November 24 asked the Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, William Ampem-Darko to proceed on an indefinite leave. This follows allegations of malfeasance which was leveled against him in an audit report.
The Media Commission also directed the Board Chairman of GBC, Prof. John Aheto to step aside.
A statement signed by the Executive Secretary of the NMC, Mr. George Sarpong and issued in Accra, said the NMC had observed that there was an "obvious breakdown of mutual trust and confidence between Prof. Aheto and Mr Ampem-Darko" which was negatively affecting the operations of GBC.
Professor Aheto however said he blames the National Media Commission for the conduct of Mr. Ampem-Darko because they are protecting him.
“I blame [the] National Media Commission. They only protect people in media houses and their CEO’s but not Boards”
He added that the constitutional provision covering the NMC should be looked at to ensure their neutrality.
